’Ive known Will Crum for about a year and a half , since KevEKev got me on the list at Dragon Fly.I am stoked to do a interview with the “ friendly man from the streets of Costa Mesa”.The release of a new record is always exciting between friends, especially when the record is created by one of your friends. It cost $1.81 for Will to send his new record to me, but this release is priceless. From the fire trucks on Flower to the fireworks on the 4th of July, this is Will Crum. This is the tale of a young band struggling with limitations in the city of Costa Mesa.

Brokenoutline- Is this your first major release?

Will- Yes, first one on Jackson Industries. I did one two years ago called "Workhorse", but I did all the instruments and all the engineering by myself. It was recorded in a small studio in Los Angeles above where the Black Eyed Peas were rehearsing. The album is on iTunes and still on Cd Baby.

Brokenoutline-I was amazed how many different people you recorded with on this record- who exactly?

Will- Oh man... The sessions started in Eagle Rock in mid-July of 2006. It was so hot you could hardly go outside. Alex Orbison came buy and we cut the tracks "Little Girl" and "Wake Me Up". I wrote "Wake Me Up" about opening for Whitestarr in New Orleans, so it was cool to have Orbi drum on that one. Beardo did bass on those too. The rest of the album was done at our house in Costa Mesa on Flower Street. My dear friend Toddy came down from Venice Beach on a nice autumn Sunday and recorded vocals for "Fourth of July". Kevin Yoches from The Pricks drums on four of the tracks. He played a huge part in the development of the songs. As did Ozzie Clarke's bass on "More Punk..." I Lve the Pricks. Joel Williams drums on two. He did the last two songs we cut, and he brought something different to the table, which I'm grateful for. He plays live with me now. CJ Brion and Jordan Lambs engineered the record. Those dudes have the ear. Oh, and Cisco Adler helped me write the last track. I went to his studio in January of this year with intentions to record one song, but I had another called "hey Love", and he persuaded me to change a couple things with the new one. Tada! Cool guy.

Brokenoutline - Who did the artwork for your CD?

Will- Geoff Shivley did the art. I wanted to do this thing where I took a picture of sand at The Wedge in Newport Beach, and though he supported me on it, one morning we had a serious talk and he convinced me otherwise. His design is very unique. A lot of room, kinda like the sound on the record. For the cover, he took a picture of one of our Flower Street parties... surreal, you know?

Brokenoutline- Have you had any drinks with the devil lately?

Will- Actually yes, the last one was at 10:07 AM- I had a Greyhound.... right now!

Brokenoutline- Where are you shredding next?

Will- I'll be doing some things in Hawaii right before Christmas. And then, The Blue Maroons and I are playing a music / art festival in Palm Springs on December 30th with The Shrunken Wool Sweaters and a bunch of other cool folks.

Brokenoutline- New Year’s Eve? New Year’s Day?

Will- New Year’s morning. Beardo's house!

Brokenoutline- Who were your influences when writing this record?

Will- Everything that is front of me... don't like to look back much. And lately, it's been all the characters around here in Orange County. There is so much growth in Costa Mesa and it's little surrounding area right now. Places like The Detroit Bar, Avalon Bar, E-Vocal... and then you have the ocean. Going on the beach late at night has been a huge influence, especially when the stripping of clothes is involved and fireworks in the sky.

Brokenoutline- What is a typical day like for you when recording and writing ?

Will- When we doing the album at the Flower Street house, we'd wake up around 2 or 3 pm, and something would always be brewing. Literally, you know, beer would come over at that point. Then maybe a bike ride, maybe the beach, maybe some starnge adventure- who knows! But eventually we would start recording... then more beer and whatever else. Then voluntary sleep or pass out around 4 or 5. Rinse. Repeat. Wash. It's changed now for me, though. Now that the record is finished I live a much more balanced life. I'm like a sponge. These days I'm soaking everything up again.

Brokenoutline- Would you ever feel like doing Reality TV?

Will - (Laughs.) I already feel like I have sort of done that!

Brokenoutline- Did you experiment with any drugs while recording this record?

Will- I didn't personally, but I definitely lived vicariously through a bunch of the people involved. We had a great time doing this album, and we were always under the influence of something... whether it be alcohol, or dope, or a beautiful lady, or the night. We had a lot of fires at our place. There were many people coming through.

Brokenoutline- Is there a tour in the near future?

Will- Yes, we are so ready you have no idea !

Brokenoutline- What do you have to say to Hudson?

Will- What’s up Dizzle? I want to work with him on another music video. The one we did for "A Drink With The Devil" was a lot fun and, in my opinion, captured everything going on my life life at that point. He's got a great eye.

Brokenoutline - Are you coming out with anything else soon besides this CD?

Will- There will be a novel in January, and a line of T-Shirts shortly after that. Maybe another record too.

Brokenoutline- anything else you would like to add ?

Will- " Not so bad, to lose what you don't even have ".

Beardo : When not on tour I live in van nuys ca
